No Running Water in the Alaskan Bush: The Daily Alaska

Last week, I linked to Mudflats.net, to a story about buying groceries. There is another post, from the same woman, explaining how they handle life without it. Again, I really am very sure I would not want to live like this. I hate laundromats and I love showers too much.

Here's the link...Life in Nunam Iqua - Water.

Last night we had a pretty good snow for a while, and I took a couple photos.

I had just gotten the snow off the Jeep and shoveled around it. Didn't last long...

And the pile of snow that used to be the kids' fort.

This morning I shoveled all that lovely snow off the driveway. There were 3 or 4 inches of snow on it, so it took an hour. But an hour of shoveling is 500 calories. So it's not all bad.

  1. Shovel? You use a shovel? And you live in Alaska? At the very least i woudl think you would have a snowblower - if not a flamethrower.

  2. Lou -- c'mon. I am a good environmentalist. Why use a machine that pollutes when I can get a workout and a (kinda) clear driveway at the same time? Besides, we moved here from the desert. Snowblowers are useless in the desert, and until my husband is home enough to have to do most of the shoveling, he won't think we need a snowblower.

But...I think we have a gas can and a lighter...

  3. I'm still at brrrrrr! And I think shoveling snow for an hour burns more than 500 calories -- I think it would be more like 1,000,000 calories. At least in my mind it would!!!!

  4. Patsy...it should be about a million calories, if there were any justice in the world!

I love the swirling snow shot! As long as I don't have to be in the cold.

  6. Good workout. I can't believe you don't have a snow blower either. The swirling snow is a great shot.

  7. maggie...that's exactly the kind of stuff I say, except change cold for hot. I hate hot weather. Cold weather? Easy. We have a ton of jackets and gloves and scarves and mittens and gloves and boots, plus if you start moving you warm up. Can't do that when it's 110...

secret mom...yeah. I am not so much with the snowblower thing, since we don't have that big a driveway. It's hard work sometimes, but very satisfying when it's done. Plus I have a teenager and an almost teenager...they are really good about helping with the shoveling.

Or maybe you just find me horribly annoying and are about to let me know. Go ahead, I can deal.

So, whatever, you know, leave a message. Thanks!!!
