Flaming Free Speech Fridays....

Yeah, I got flamed. Having been reading and writing on political blogs for several years, I found the anonymous flame rather tame and amusing. Last year on one political blog I was called
  1. fascist
  2. deluded
  3. naive
  4. conservative
  5. a fool
  6. a bunch of other stuff
simply because I disagreed with various opinions. People who know me find this pretty humorous, because I am a bleeding heart liberal from way back. That's life on the political blogs. But it must be good practice for not letting stuff bother you, because the flamish comment on my blog didn't really bother me.

I mean, I was sitting at home eating pretzels and surfing the net when I read that I must be hedonistic. Every single time I think about it I laugh, it just completely cracks me up. I guess pretzels are the new cocaine.

But it showed me that I have made some real friends here on the blogosphere, since several jumped to my defense. Defended me really well, to boot. (Thanks, guys!) And Tasina made a really excellent point -- the anonymous flamer criticized me well, anonymously. This person wasn't brave enough to even leave their first name when they were being so rude about me. I have no problem with free speech -- the only comments I will delete are spam or extraordinarily rude, vulgar or foul ones. Even ones that disagree with me, like this one:

How sad for you, that you find sex cheap, when it is beautiful and should be kept sacred. This attitude is why we have unwed mothers and gangs. The children have no fathers, because people do as they please there are no rules. It's all about feeling good with reckless abandon to what is right. You must be a complete hedonist.
which was a response to my anger at the people -- I believe I may have called them nutcase fundies -- who forced a message of abstinence to replace the message "use condoms" in Africa, and which has resulted in the HIV infection rate to rise again, and my complete bewilderment at the fact that these people think they have the right and responsibility to be the moral compass for the world, and asked why anyone cares what other people, people wholly unconnected and unknown to them, what those people do. Of course I must admit I was not all that polite about them:

If my neighbor chooses to marry his dog and have an affair with the pool boy, the only way it affects me is if he leaves his wife out in the backyard all night and her barking keeps me up. But some yahoo in Alabama apparently thinks that what I do or my neighbor does (actually, I have very nice neighbors, I think) is the yahoo's business. Idiot.
Perhaps I struck too close to home. Perhaps this person really thinks sex is sacred and wants others to experience it in the same way. Perhaps this person just really really thinks sex belongs in whispers and darkened bedrooms and is not to be discussed in polite company. I don't know, and we may never know.

What I haven't said up to this point, and what I would like to say to anonymous, is that my attitude about sex -- which you have completely misinterpreted, by the way -- is much healthier than yours. My attitude about sex and nudity and my neighbor's sexuality is not harmful to others, but your judgmental and condemnatory attitude certainly can be.

Here's the big point you just don't seem to understand: I am not advocating teen sex, or gay sex, or bestiality, or adultery, or any other deviance you seem to have attributed to me. I simply and strongly believe that it is not my right nor my responsibility to decide how my neighbor should behave, when that behavior has no impact on me. That my neighbor chooses an abortion cannot in any way impact my life. Nor can it impact yours. The fact that someone chooses to end a pregnancy cannot materially impact you. It may make your heart hurt, it may be against your interpretation of God's will, it may make you very unhappy, but that is not enough to allow you to force the rest of us to follow your belief system.

See, I realize that my life is not perfect. I have many flaws, and make mistakes, and do the best I can. I try to follow my own moral compass and walk my talk. I feel no need to wonder if I am walking your talk. I don't care if you think me hedonistic because I don't subscribe to the same narrow world view that you do.

Horrifying. Just horrifying.

Kohl's department store is going to open at 4 am on Friday, for the day after Thanksgiving sales.

Four AM.

FOUR FREAKIN' AM.

I do not get this at all. Why would anyone waste prime sleep in time to get up to go to a department store, to buy crap for Christmas presents that people are just going to exchange anyway?

I spent hours at Barnes and Noble waiting until midnight to buy the last Harry Potter book, with the kids. I went to EBGames at midnight to stand in line for 45 minutes to buy HALO3 with Thor. Mark left work to go to Burger King to get the boys a Buzz Lightyear puppet. We can do the insane shopping thing.

But not that insane. Going to a department store at 4 am is insane. There is nothing in Kohl's that could induce me into wasting a rare sleep-in morning for some dumb sale at a department store. Not even if it was Nordstrom's.

(Okay, if Dayton's department store came back, and I could go to the store in downtown Minneapolis, possibly I would get up at 4 am. But nothing less than that could induce me to go shopping on Friday. Nothing.)

My sunflower moment for today...

I am a
Sunflower

What Flower
Are You?

There is not a day that goes by that you can't find something good about the world and your fellow human.

I don't think so. I just joined a cranky bloggers group. I can be pathologically glass is half full, but I tend cynical toward my fellow man.

But since I am now a sunflower, I will find something good about my fellow human every day...

So today's sunflower moment:

liquid soap. some fellow human created liquid soap...except there's liquid soap in public bathrooms, and people don't wash their hands after using the toilet. so liquid soap not a good thing about fellow human (why isn't it humans? it says fellow human on the garden quiz website. That kinda bugs me...I really don't think I am a sunflower at all).

so no to liquid soap. liquid soap is not something good about my fellow human. and wash your hands. gross.

Dancing with the Stars. it's so fun, and so cheesy, and my Mom loves it. where else can you see great dancers and pathetic dancers and Tucker Carlson fall flat on his face (although not literally, unfortunately)?

Dancing with the Stars...my sunflower moment for today.

Whoa...

Just for a second there, I was left-brained. I was logical, detail oriented, reality-based, practical and safe.

That's right, I couldn't get the lady to spin clockwise! This lady, that is...

It was strange. I suddenly wanted to organize my sock drawer and check on our car insurance. Then I got the lady to spin the right-brained way, and went back to sorting socks by shape rather than color and promptly forgot where I left the car keys.

Yes, you can sort socks by shape. I bought 40 socks -- those socks that end at the top of the shoe, peds or something -- 40 because they came in packs of ten pairs, but not the ten pairs I most wanted, so I had to buy two packs. I mean, why couldn't they pack the red with pink stripes and the solid lime green with a pink band in the same pack?

So I have 40 socks that are all exactly the same, except some are striped and some are solid, and some have a band of color around the top, and some are green and some are pink and some are red. But it's not really like wearing two different socks, even though one is pink and one is orange, because they are exactly the same shape.

And this letter to the editor from the BYU newspaper really wants to be here...I have pasted it four times instead of what I wanted to paste. So here it is...

We are tempted by immodesty in fashion all around us; do we really need BYU students giving even more bad examples?! The front page picture of "fall fashions" portrays a dress that is too short by LDS standards (if you disagree, read the "for the strength of the youth" pamphlet or the honor code).
Or perhaps it's my subtle punishment for making fun of those serious BYU students...It's my first step on the descent into that lower heaven of sad people. Either way, I do not want to read "for the strength of the youth." Next week I promise to make fun of a completely different group of people.

Like those people who would choose to go to a school with this for a mascot...

Really really necessary?

The other day, I was making a right turn, and somebody from the other direction turned right behind me.

Then he sped up and got around me, in the short two blocks to the next stop light. I assumed he didn't want to be behind me on the long stretch into Tucson where you cannot pass. No biggie. Better than him riding my butt all the way...

So he whips around the corner, right ahead of me, then turns into the McDonald's parking lot. Um, what? You were jonesing for a Big Mac so seriously you had to race around in front of me?

Seriously, this idiot saved four seconds.

People are dumb.

What were they thinking...

A site called “Who Represents” where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name - wait for it - is
www.whorepresents.com

Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at
www.expertsexchange.com -- This seems to be strictly an ad website.

Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at
www.penisland.net Not a real website either. Juvenile penis humor.

Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at
www.therapistfinder.com This one seems to be real. Huh. One would think that perhaps having the word rapist in a website designed to help people in mental distress is not the best idea ever.

Then, of course, there’s these brainless art designers, and their whacky website:
www.speedofart.com Seems to be attached to a real company, but a worthless and annoying website if so.
