Julie, thanks for the reply. Trash bags are the one kind of plastic bag I'm not sure how to do without...yet. In the meantime, I can get some more cute reusable shopping bags. :) Like you said, we can be glad about how many plastic bags we *don't* use!

I use them as much as I can myself!
But I really think that they should make rules on the packaging of food as well!
How much plastic is being used to pack apples, fruit, milk, coke, eggs, ............... the list is endless!
There should really be another way, don't you think?

Hey, Stephanie...no. I was thinking about the garbage bags we use when I was writing this...I know they have bags that decompose, but I also know they can leak...

I was thinking that we need to start using them at least for cleaning up after the dogs in the yard...

A small seaside town here called Coles Bay decided a few years ago that they would be a plastic-free town. It worked.. and now more small towns are following on..

My grocery store started selling reusable bags for less than $1, and they hold more, are more sturdy and have an excellent strap making them easier to carry. Oh, and they take $0.06 per bag off of every grocery bill (pennies really do add up to dollars). I'm sold. That it helps the environment is also a nice bonus, but this one has been really easy for me to implement in my daily life. I'm in love with my reusable bags.

I saw that about the mesh produce bags, and I think I have some tulle from an old costume project around here somewhere -- more recycling, using up old costume fabric instead of driving to the store and buying more!

I have a couple of those Trader Joe's bags, but I keep finding them so handy for other things (taking the kids' snowsuits back and forth to school, using as beach bags in summer, storing all the wiffle balls and bats, and--seriously--holding all the stupid plastic grocery bags I get at the store so I can reuse those to scoop up after the dog) that I almost never have them in my car for the actual groceries. But after reading this, I'm so inspired that I'm just going to buy a few more of them and switch over.

As for produce, check out the links Lotus had for the mesh produce bags. Super easy to make if you have a sewing machine, and a great alternative both for the environment and for making the produce keep longer. I'm going to make some this coming weekend. Thanks for the inspiring post and all the great links!
